History of Juneteenth

June 18 at 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Tyler D. Parry, an associate professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at UNLV, will share the history of the Juneteenth holiday and its broader importance within the United States. Using images and historical documentation, he examines its origins within Galveston, Texas, an island city on the Gulf Coast, and how the celebration eventually came to other locations like Las Vegas, Nevada through the โ€œGreat Migration,โ€ the movement of Black Americans from the U.S. South from 1910-1970.
