Tyler D. Parry, an associate professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies at UNLV, examines the history of the Juneteenth holiday and its broader importance within the United States. Using images and historical documentation, he examines its origins within Galveston, Texas, an island city in the Gulf Coast, and how the celebration eventually came to other locations like Las Vegas through the movement of Black Americans from the South during the Great Migrationย between 1910 and 1970.
