Up all night: Was wrapping up an evening of jaunting around DTLV Saturday and wanted a non-alkie nightcap to wind down. The chilly weather and lambent urban verve called for nothing other than a lazy late-hour café hang. Didn't think I'd have luck finding anyplace Downtown, but, whaddya know, The Parlour on Carson is open until midnight Thursdays through Saturdays. Vibe-wise, just what I was craving: Cozy, sleepy, slouchy, slacky, weirdo-friendly late-night languor. Had some killer hot chocolate (complete with toast-it-yourself marshmallow setup), but they also serve adult bevs and a $5 "FCK Inflation" smashburger. In other 'hoods, hit up the ever-bustling study spot Madhouse Coffee (open until 2a), boho greenhouse Gäbi Coffee & Bakery (10p), or warm and quirky Grouchy John's on Maryland (9p) for an after-hours fix.

🥀 Personality Loss

I harbor strong suspicions that Evan Blythin wrote his own obituary. Like him, it's wry, witty, and terse. I'd interviewed Blythin, lovingly dubbed "the unofficial mayor of Blue Diamond," many times over the years about the ever-present tension between Las Vegas' heedless sprawl and rural conservation, and I had always admired what I can only describe as his highly principled recalcitrance and derisive suspicion of our stupid modernity. A true cosmic rebel to the end. ✦ RIP as well to Downtown mischief-maker Charles Christians – wisecracking Huntridge Tavern habitué and artistic builder ✦ Style maven and The Hypnotiques singer Kitty Chow is alive and among us, thank heavens, but her Paradise Palms house – creative hub, community hangout – is in peril. Hit her Funraising Variety Show Jan. 19 at Cornish Pasty to keep her midmod spot swingin'.
