Pitch perfect: Just because Battle for Vegas July 12 at Las Vegas Ballpark is a charity softball game doesn't mean the players phone it in. Members of the Las Vegas Raiders and the Vegas Golden Knights bring their A game to this surprisingly grueling match bookended by a home run derby and fireworks show.

THE LAST SHREDS of cardboard firework shrapnel have been swept up, the terrified pets becalmed and accounted for, and now we settle into the long hot stretch of a proper Vegas summer. Fortunately, we've got plenty to take your mind off the triple-digit temps, from massive sneaker parties to laser-lit rock epics to satirical shows skewering matrimonial pandemonium. Trust: all these fireworks blast off indoors. Cheers! – Andrew Kiraly 🤍

🔥 Hot ticket: The Smith Center is offering discounted tickets for the rousing right-to-vote musical Suffs Oct. 7-12 until July 11 with the code SUFFS4TH.

Rare bird: Anthony Bondi is a longtime local artist – collagist, photographer, Burning Man sculptor – but he's much more than that. With a thoughtful appreciation for our city of spectacle and the intrigues of our desert environs, he represents the closest thing Las Vegas has to an articulation of a distinct local aesthetic. Bondi's spent his life in rigorous, playful parley with what "beautiful" means in a city such as Vegas, and it's osmosed into the arts and culture scene in a million subtle ways. Now Bondi's got a book: He's just published a memoir, Flamingo Wash: The Era of Electromagnetic Radiation in Small Las Vegas, that he's releasing with two reading gigs: July 11 at SPCKRFT and July 17 at The Writer's Block.

🦖 Party Like It's 10,000 BC

This is going to be a party of historic proportions: The 34th birthday of the Las Vegas Natural History Museum July 12. Situated on the "Cultural Corridor" that seems to be slowly getting eclipsed by the Arts District and Symphony Park, the LVNHM has nonetheless managed to stay relevant with its deceptively expansive, critter-crowded exploratorium. Haul in the kids for celebratory fossil digs and LEGO sessions while you drink in the Wes Anderson vibes of unblinking ibexes staring into your soul.

Past Lives: Flooding at Charleston Underpass, 1984. The Charleston Boulevard railroad underpass, built in 1949 and expanded in 1960, earned the nickname “Lake Charleston” after heavy rains. The Regional Flood Control District upgraded the underpass infrastructure in the late 2000s. (Past Lives is a partnership with Vintage Las Vegas.)
