Stay frosty: Take the bewilderingly expansive Disney universe of characters, toss them in a blender with chilled axel jumps and Biellmann spins, and you've got a rough idea of what to expect at Disney on Ice Jan. 9-12 at Thomas & Mack Center.

AS A RADICAL ACT of pre-emptive self-care, I've decided to take it easy on the new year's resolutions this year. I'm thinking that if I manage to get the Christmas lights down by the end of March, then, zibbity-boom, I've notched my personal growth goals for 2025. What I'm not going easy on is obsessively curating the coolest events in Vegas. We're kicking off the new year with a glitter-bomb cornucopia of rambunctious talk-show satire, nästy metal girlz, live ragtime cinema sounds, and so much more. Cheers! – Andrew Kiraly 🤍

📖
Word burglar: Not gonna lie, I spent most of holiday break slothily couchbound under the cozy blaze of an 800-lumen reading lamp, gnawing through five books, the fruit of an early new year's reading resolution triggered by this charmingly grumpy inspo guide. Will I continue clocking ~100 pages a day while freshly plunged back into the workaday swing? Hoping! One motivator (besides the standard Faustian lust for totalized cosmic wisdom, etc.) is, yay, the perpetually renewing prospect of buying more books. My fave spots continue to be The Writer's Block for new stuff, Las Vegas Books for surprising scores in old-school lit, and Hasta Siempre Books for laser-curated classics, pristine rarities, and high-concept novelties. (And don't forget the countless scores in waiting at the used bookshops of The Library District, whose Winter Reading Challenge runs through Jan. 31.)

🦥 Rec Room

Crushed a backlog of spots I've been meaning to visit; here's a fresh plate of what I hella recommend: Delilah supper club in The Wynn is sumptuous and sleek, a visual mosh of Regency rigor and maximalist jazz den. Foodwise, their chicken tenders (!) ended my lifelong bemused indifference toward the food form ✦ Ha ha, the highly convivial Crush Pad wine bar does a running black-glass blind taste challenge – guess the grape and country, get it for free. (We guessed Sangiovese/Italy on a Petite Verdot/Argentina lol.) ✦ Did some time-travel hiking at the nicely appointed Ice Age Fossils State Park. Back in the day – like, 40k years back in the day – it was a gluey swamp crawling with giant sloths, saber-toothed tigers, mammoths, and OG cameloids. Coolest of all, you can hike through the two-mile Big Dig trench, where paleontologists were unearthing all kinda megabeast fossils in the '60s ✦ Totally feeling the urban louche vibe of graffiti-streaked Petite Bohème, but I'm really feeling their roster of potent, precision-tuned cocktails.

🧊 Icy Reception

I'd typically only wish a January exile to central-east Nevada on my worst enemies but, hey, things switch up when you can ride on a ... fireworks-belching steam train? Hell yeah! That's just one highlight of Ely's Fire and Ice Winter Festival Jan. 17-19, a frosty community orgy of bonfires, bowling, and bike races – not to mention live bands and ice sculpture contests – now in its 22nd year. The clutch of after-parties downtown are a great excuse to check out Ely's eye-popping collection of civic murals, too.

📆 Say You Want a Resolution

I think it was tedious self-improver and ye olde American kite bro Benjamin Franklin who said, "New year, new you!" but don't quote me on that. If you've made some resolutions for 2025 in the standard spirit of grim, cheerless determination, here's a few ways to keep 'em fun. Looking to get outdoors more? Ease into it at Birding in the Park Jan. 10 at Springs Preserve ✦ Getting more active? People are positively paddle-mad over the recently opened Chicken N Pickle ✦ Looking to scratch the artsy urge and make new friends outside the bar scene? Meet creative souls at this life drawing workshop Jan. 9 at Slonina ARTSpace, Jan. 9 at Canvas & Cocktails at Container Park, or at this paint-pouring party Jan. 11 at Arttherapy Café.
