🖍️ Life Drawing

Picasso likened painting to keeping a diary, and that same casual interplay between art and life jazzes up several exhibits I want to tell you about. The works in Kirby M. Brownell’s Scribble, opening July 3, stem from what’s called “surreal automatism”: suppressing your thinking mind so your instincts, experiences, and subconscious can get jiggy in your art. In Brownell’s case, the results are unfiltered blurts from his bipolar mind, layered works thick with personal significance. The art is just as personal but the mood much lighter in Zoë Camper’s Everything Starts With a Pencil. Her pixelated drawings depict crux moments in her artist’s journey — with overlaid numbers and symbols that promise encrypted narratives. The Asian-diaspora artists featured in Living Here, opening June 20 at UNLV’s Barrick Museum, plumb their lives, memories, and histories to show how the ephemera you'd note in your diary — food, fashion, pop culture — “permeate diasporic movement with the sensuous materiality of touch, taste, sight, and sound.” – Scott Dickensheets
