Cartoon network: Japanese pop culture continues to explode like a multi-panel manga punch, and Anime Night Mart July 19 at Area 15 is proof. This popular night of cosplay, commerce, and community has gone Super Sayain from its previous form in a Chinatown parking lot.

FROM GRITTY CLOWN noir to squeaky-clean comedy to sommelier speakeasy gatherings, here's what made The List this weekend. Cheers! – Andrew Kiraly 🤍

🛍️ Friday July 18

  • Once a month, they open the secret little Russian-nesting-doll market-inside-a-swap-meet that is the Fantastic Vintage Market. This weekend is that once-a-month Russian-nesting-doll moment! (Through Sunday) 10a, Fantastic Vintage Market
  • Drugs. Murder. Floppy shoes. Lies. Dark secrets. Red noses. Passion. Betrayal. Grease paint. It's Clown Bar, a sleazy noir of zany big-top, rock-bottom fun. 730p, Majestic Repertory Theatre
  • Sure, the flyer depicts a woman eating a Sriracha-drenched jumbo gummi bear human heart, but trust me when I say goths are the most chill, tolerant, and welcoming people I know. And if that's the case, imagine how especially cool and wondrous something called Goth Prom would be. 8p, The Usual Place
  • The comics at the Clean Comedy Challenge aren't @$%&ing around. This weekend "boot camp" of workshops and seminars also includes squeaky-clean standup sets judged by you. The G-rated grand prize winner gets a sweet $1,000 and the possibly professionally problematic title of "Clean Comedy Champion." (Through Saturday.) 9p, Ahern Hotel
🗓️
My weekend plan: 1️⃣ Do not call do not text do not email do not verbal me for I will be rapt in 16 hours of catatonic chess nerd-dom at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour at The Wynn 2️⃣ Catching up on missed classics; continue the shatteringly poignant Beloved by Toni Morrison 3️⃣ My wonderful wife early-birthday-gifted me a Criterion subscription and I just might give the enchantingly gentle and sweetly perfect Here a discreetly weepy rewatch 4️⃣ Another birthday gift to chew on: finally checking out the newish dinner menu at Winnie & Ethel's with some of my favoritest friends.

Also Friday ➤

Neon Paddle at Lake Las Vegas might be what floats your (glowing) boat ✦ Worth the weight: The Vegas Summer Bash at The Plaza is a body-positivity weekender for plus-sized ladies and their admirers ✦ Of course this is happening at the quaint li'l Blue Diamond Library: a Tiny Library Jam Band.

👉 ICYMI, here's a sack o' zippity musicals, indoor beer fests, and Summerween shenanigans to round out your weekend:

🤡 Summer beer | Clown murder | God chorus | Hyper ska | Naked dance | Goth prom | Early Halloween
The coolest things to do in Las Vegas this week, ever.

🥋 Saturday July 19

  • Moving Meditation is like a sampler pack of the slo-mo mindful movement arts:  Nicola Lea Kilyushik fluidly leads you through the fundamentals of Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and Yoga Nidra in the rarefied environs of Notorious RDA's gorgeous art shrine. 10a, Rita Deanin Abbey Art Museum
  • Calling all squirters: You're invited to slip 'n' slide on up to the free adults-only water fight called Soaked. "First annual" scans as "Let's see if people show up," but how else are you gonna make new friends in Vegas than by shooting water at strangers? 1p, Pioneer Park
  • Love the intriguing premise of this sippy confab Secret Sips of Sommeliers (note two time slots), in which pro wine aficionados share four bottles from their greedily hoarded personal stash. 3p and 5p, Crush Pad
  • Listen, if you're gonna get jellyfished into a margarita-tube mob on the Fremont Street Experience on a Saturday night, you can do worse than that mob being Sublime fans aka diet Juggalos. They're dozily friendly, reliably high, and exude default good vibes before Lululemon moms colonized the concept. They'll be there in redolent force to catch sunny-side pop-reggae jammer Rome, who kinda-sorta with-multiple-legal-asterisks played with Sublime for a minute. 9p, Fremont Street Experience

Main squeeze: A high of 100 degrees on Friday? Brrrr! That means you can cozy up in scarves and flannels for the chilly closing weekend of The SpongeBob Musical July 18-19 at Spring Mountain Ranch.

Also Saturday ➤

Pop in for Bubble Hour at Wineaux for a guided tour of festive fizzies ✦ Take advantage of sane summer temps and shop hella local at The Makers Hive Market at The District at Green Valley Ranch ✦ Improv Shmimprov promises no-rules comedy on the late shift at Mom's Basement Theatre Wanna get in some scary-early Halloween shopping? Retro Hex Market at Fergusons is your cauldron of tea.

🛥️ Sunday July 20

  • There are a 1,294 yacht rock brunches in the valley, but there's only one Yacht Rock Brunch where you can inhale a bowl of rum, vodka, gin, and wine dubbed the Scorpion. 12p, Golden Tiki
  • Family tensions befouling your domestic bliss? Drape the kin in kandi and dose 'em up in a cuddle puddle of pure PLUR at Family Rave. This wildly popular (and reasonably inexpensive) all-ages disco day party is usually sold out by now, so count this as a last-minute Sunday funday. 1p, Area 15
  • Tbh, kicking myself that I didn't snatch up Babymetal tickets, like, months ago. If you've never heard, it's ripping, forceful heavy metal fronted by a trio of trilling J-pop dolls. How is it so compellingly catchy? Probably because it's such an unlikely mashup. 7p, Pearl Concert Theater

Also Sunday ➤

It would be incredible if the Choir of Sidney Sussex College busted out a soul-lifting rendition of your favorite song of all time at Guardian Angel Cathedral ✦ Night time is the rhyme time for Poetry After Dark at Moonlight Karaoke ✦ Wind down the weekend with some pluck as acoustic folk acts strum up a Summer Showcase at Taverna Costera.

🙏 Hope you have the raddest weekend. Thanks for your support! – Andrew Kiraly 🤍
