Wiesn up: On any given weekend, east Fremont Street is typically awash in beer. But the amber waves hit different during Oktoberfest Sept. 19-21, with keg bowling, lederhosen lasses, and a wiener-dog derby.

FROM CAGEBOUND keg bowl-offs to hot dog video loops to jazz-fortified steak sandwiches, here's what made The List this weekend. Cheers! – Andrew Kiraly 🤍

🕯️ Friday September 19

  • You're sure to have a chilltastic time groovin' on the grass at Jazz at Bicentennial Park. Extra chill, in fact: In addition to being a richly accomplished jazz musician, the Boulder City Jazz Quartet's Thom Pastor is also, no kidding, a certified Zen Master who leads the Zen Center of Las Vegas. (And yes, he's as gentle, wise, and mischievous as he looks.) 6p, Bicentennial Park
  • Ooh, looks like Zone B tix for Candlelight: Queen vs. Abba are still available. If you haven't been to one of these precious little flickerdoodly date-night mini-concerts, the candles are LED but the music is LEGIT. 6p, The Industrial
  • At any other quivering nanoblip on the histori-tinuum of linear time, I'd indulge my privileged cynicism and dismiss Common Kings as sonic oatmeal, but we could probably all use a little Polynesian pop reggae in our veins right about now. 7p, Virgin Hotels Las Vegas
📆
My weekend plan: 1️⃣ Blargh, still exiting COVID; provided I test neg and can resume lifeworld meatplanet activities: A welcome-back wine at Garagiste 2️⃣ Prowl for fresh victims at Springs Preserve's Autumn Plant Sale 3️⃣ Dismal Michael Haneke binge continues after 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance 4️⃣ Sit in backyard, eat popsicles in meditative bemusement.

Also Friday ➤

CraftHaus wants to give you the boot – an Oktoberfest bier boot, that is – all weekend ✦ Here's a hot link: Dog Eater, a funky video-art installation opening at UNLV ✦ Laugh it off at competitive improv laugh-off Knockout! at Mom's Basement Theatre ✦ Nice, looks like they Texas-chainsawed a few bucks off tix for locals to Universal Horror Unleashed at Area 15.

👉 ICYMI, here's a sack of food trucksplosions, poltergeist shriektails, murderous Rat Packers, and quirktastic art parties:

🍟 Snack carnival | Drunk ghosts | Indie arts bash | LSD cumbia | Splat Pack | Anti-fest | Fancy lunch
The coolest things to do in Las Vegas this week, ever.

🌴 Saturday September 20

  • The city is christening a shiny new shard of DTLV at the Goodman Plaza Grand Opening Celebration. Don't worry, this isn't the yawny ribbon-cutting part, this is the rad live music part, with rock and funk bands such as The Dirty Hooks and actually-probably-legendary Home Cookin' taking the stage. Also don't forget to take in the suite of public art by awesome homegrown talent. 11a, Goodman Plaza
  • Pedaling Through Paradise is the perfect way to appreciate the luxuriantly rambling ranch homes of this historic neighborhood in central Vegas – because the curvy streets promptly punish car-bound rubberneckers. 1130a, Paradise Palms
  • Las Vegas rock duo Tiger & Dove is scare-quotes "only" a two-man outfit, but they somehow power up a serious amount of pummel with their bass-and-drum setup. Think rattling, rambunctious bar-rock with lyrics genetically engineered for shouting along to. They're releasing album Daddy's Drugs with a host of other valley rawkers. 730p, The Usual Place
  • They rebranded the bar inside The Punk Rock Museum to the ostensibly snarkily Yelp-inspired Three Star Punk Bar and you know what that means: Start the piiiiitttt! 8p, The Punk Rock Museum
  • Felicidades to ever-bompin' banda spot Zuna, celebrating its one-year anniversary. It gives me throbby heartglow knowing the music is alive on the grounds of what was ye olde alt-rock cave Calamity Jayne’s Nashville Nevada. 10p, Zuna

Verging territory: We've all had one of those a-ha (or oh no!) moments that have helped us through a creative block. Thresholds Sept. 20 at The Beverly Theater, with Jordan Kisner and Jayson Greene, is a live podcast chat that explores those breakthrough moments.

Also Saturday ➤

Get an earful of furious toilet poetry, jiggle to filth-rock, and get flush with new friends at Life Is Shit at Dive Bar ✦ Ooh, $10 steak sando + fries at my favorite subaquatic carpeted jazz bar The Dispensary Lounge ✦ I spur you to support the LGBTQ+ community at its Wild Westified AFAN Black & White Party at The Palms ✦ Where the blood of Christ has mild tannins and hints of blackberry and cherry bark: Uncorked at Boulder City's St. Andrew Roman Catholic Church.

👟 Sunday September 21

  • I think this is what is called a [holds nose] brand activation: Nike is demo-ing fresh shoe tech in early-morning showcase Calling All Runners, during which fleet-toed fans can literally test-run new footwear. 730a, Downtown Summerlin
  • Psst. Hey, buddy. In the market for some sweet decorative gourds? I hear it's the season. You'll find 'em at this Sunday Craft Festival. 10a, Tivoli Village
  • Remember that scene in Titanic when the band is playing the super-sad death music aka "Nearer My God to Thee," embracing the inevitability of their tragic demise as the gigantic-metaphor-for-human-vanity ship founders? Totally made up by James Cameron for the clout! Scholar Dulais Rhys sinks this cheesy but cinematically compelling myth in The Musicians and Music of the Titanic. Thanks Rhys – you're king of the wooooorld! Various times, local libraries

Also Sunday ➤

The perennially underrated Las Vegas Sinfonietta busts out its season opener at Clark County Library ✦ You can engage in some Revelry ($$$$) or you can Feast ($) ✦ No mass-produced chintzy sweatshop junk at the The Harvest Boutique Craft Show, proudly put on by the Las Vegas Crafters Guild at Sahara West Library.

🙏 Hope you have the raddest weekend. Thanks for your support! – Andrew Kiraly 🤍
